Majorca in May

Cala Bona Harbour

I was fortunate to spend a lovely family holiday in Sa Coma, Majorca recently and having been to the island several times previously in the school holidays it was so nice to go earlier in the season when it was quieter and the temperature a little more comfortable.

We stayed at the Protur Safari Park and as backed up by Trip Advisor (I normally search through their reviews for about a week…) the hotel was stunning. Courteous staff, spotlessly clean, a wide variety of food to cover all tastes, none of the usual reserving a sunbed around one of the pools, about 300 metres to the beach, shops and bars nearby and the highlight for me, cycle paths that allow you as a family to leisurely cycle along the coast from Sa Coma to Cala Bona. In fact this stretch of coastline really caters for the cyclists and the hotel had a limitless supply of bikes in all shapes and sizes, all free of charge apart from the €10 deposit.

Sa Coma Sunrise

An early 5.30am alarm call and I was on my way down to the nearby beach, it’s a great time of the day to be the only one bar a couple of joggers on the beach and the sunrises were spectacular. The results were well worth lugging my Manfrotto tripod through the airports although the 15kgs weight limit for the suitcases was a struggle to meet, hence the frantic transfer of various pairs of shoes at check in to hand luggage;-) From London Luton Airport near my home it is only a two hour flight to Palma, although it is an hour transfer time from to Sa Coma. I will have to return for a weekend stay in Palma to photograph the cathedral and the harbour.

Funnily enough my first holiday with my wife long before we were married was in Majorca and I distinctly remember then taking far too long taking photos of the cathedral from every conceivable angle…nothing has changed all these years later
